Childhood Memory of Eating with Someone

When I was about five or six years old I started eating mayo sandwiches and my mother would make them for me everyday when I came home from school. I would set at the kitchen window with my mom as she read her paper and I would go to town on that sandwich. I enjoyed those moments with my mother as a child become as I got older my mother and I was not as close as we were when I was younger, so I really loved being with her and to this day I still remind her of it.

  1. Maisha, I think everyone mommy made them those same sandwiches. That was the meal back in the days. Like your mommy, mines did the same except for I got mine packed in my lunch bag daily. Since my sandwiches were given to me in my lunch bag, by the time it was lunch, my sandwich was very soggy so I could not enjoy it like I wanted to. I had to add some chips in between it to give it a little favor. I wish I could have had a fresh one waiting on my daily when I got home.

  2. Hi Maisha,
It's nice having memories about a time when we were young and spent time with our parents. It sounds like you had a good early experience with food and what made it better was that your mom didn't just give you the food and leave you to eat it, she sat there with you while you ate. I've never had a mayo sandwich, but you make it sound good. Thanks for sharing your memory with us.

  3. Hello Maisha
Time has been change. We all became occupied with life, it is hard for family to get together to do something. But we still have our memories. I spent all my childhood in my original country in Africa, I can tell all mothers do the same care regardless of where they are coming from. It is nice to share that Maisha, it looks like you had gracious time and talk with your mother. What you wish for is easy to fulfill, talk to your mother again to spend time together and you can recall all that memory together. I wish you good luck!

  4. Hi Maisha,

Mayo sandwiches I hate with a passion, they remind me of hard times when Mom was trying to make a meal out of what little she had until we could go to the grocery store. I so hate when my son makes that sandwich and I won't dare let anyoone see him eating it. However I did the same thing as a child only my sandwich was a syrup sandwich and my Mom felt the same way about syrup sandwiches as I now feel about mayo sandwiches. Especially since I would wait until after we went shopping for groceries (at the Boys market now Ralphs) to make that sandwich and my mother use to say all that "________" food in there and you want to eat a nasty syrup sandwich. But those are some of the bitter sweet memories. I wish I could remind her of that and I know if she were still here we'd joke about it and to push my buttons she'd go make her grandson a mayo sandwich.

  8. Hey Maisha, your childhood memory is very similar to mine. My memory involved eating with my grandfather. We also drifted apart due to his condition. Your story actually touched me a little bit. Great story

  10. Maisha,
Hey isnt it crazy what we do remember from our past and how those are the days we especially miss with are mothers. I love mayo sandwiches with mustard and a little pepper to spice it up. I am happy that you can still talk and remind your mother of those types of things. Although you and your mother are going thru a rock time things will get better as long as you put it in the hand sof the lord. Good luck and great job.

  11. Maisha,
Your memory reflects just how important memories are and the fact that no one can take them away. Realizing this should empower you to help create memories for the children you work with in the classroom.
